2 Of PA's Poorest Towns Are In Delaware County

Two towns in Delaware County are among Pennsylvania's poorest. One has nearly 3,500 living in poverty, and the other more than 12,500.

Delaware County is home to two of Pennsylvania's poorest towns, according data from the 2016 Census.

Details in the 2016 Census show the two Delco towns are the 24th and 7th poorest in the Keystone State.

Darby Borough came in at No. 24.

According to the data, about a third of Darby residents live in poverty.

Out of 10,687 residents, 3,420 are impoverished.

And Chester was ranked No. 7.

Data shows of the 33,988 Chester residents, 12,575 live in poverty.

That figure is about 37 percent of the city's population.

According to the data the five poorest towns are:

  1. Indiana Borough, Indiana County – 43 percent living in poverty
  2. Lock Haven, Clinton county – 42 percent living in poverty
  3. Clarion Township, Clarion County – 42 percent living in poverty
  4. Reading, Berks County – 40 percent living in poverty
  5. Duquesne, Allegheny County – 40 percent living in poverty.
