MARPLE, PA — Nearly a mile away from the closest hydrant, flames spread in the attic of a Marple Township house. But firefighters kept the damage minimal, according to the Broomall Fire Company.
The fire broke out shortly after 5 p.m. on the 800 block of Crestview Drive. Everyone safely evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Flames were visible from a portion of the roof, where the fire was rapidly spreading after starting in the attic.
This part of town is "scarce with hydrants," with the nearest one sitting about 5,000 feet away, according to the Broomall Fire Company. But plans were in place for the situation, with additional crews called in to supply more hoses and water.
The fire was contained to the attic area, with minimal damage to the second floor, officials said.
No injuries were reported.
The State Police fire marshal is investigating the cause.
About a dozen fire departments responded to the scene or covered the Marple-Newtown area during the incident.
