MARPLE TOWNSHIP, PA — A man has died after getting into a crash that caused a five-car pileup Monday in Marple Township, police said.

Daniel Winters, 72, of Broomall, was driving north on Sproul Road at around 10:45 a.m. when he drifted into the southbound lane near Cardinal O'Hara High School.

His vehicle hit a tractor-trailer and spun into another car. Two other vehicles crashed while trying to avoid the first accident, said Marple Police Chief Brandon M. Graeff.

Two people, including Winters, were taken to Lankenau Medical Center. On Monday night, medical examiners informed police that Winters died at the hospital.

It's unclear what caused Winters's vehicle to drift onto the wrong side of the road.

The Montgomery County Coroner's Office plans to examine Winters on Tuesday to determine his cause of death.
