Didn’t Qualify for the U.S. Open This Week? Try The Senior U.S. Open Next Month
If you failed to qualify for the U.S. Open this year, and you are over age 50, perhaps the U.S. Senior Open is in the cards.
Have you noticed more automobile traffic in our neighborhood? Already, 5,000 visitors have arrived for the U.S. Open. In a few days, an additional 170,000 visitors are expected to arrive.
I've played the original golf course at St. Andrews in Scotland. I am quite familiar with the course at Merion, but for a different reason. While growing up in the area, in the 1950’s and 60’s, we used to go sledding on the Merion Golf Course. In doing so, we became familiar with every nook and cranny and sand trap on the course. There was nothing more challenging than sledding the1,000 steps on the West Course. Although once a neighborhood tradition, it is probably illegal now, fifty years later; it is probably a felony that carries a life sentence. Since they've removed so many trees from the golf course, it probably wouldn't be much fun, either. I appreciate golf more than I did during elementary school and I’ll be watching the U.S. Open on T.V. To learn the history of the Merion Golf Course, look here.
However, if you failed to qualify for the U.S. Open this year, and you are over age 50, perhaps the U.S. Senior Open is in the cards. That tournament will run from July 11-14 in Omaha Nebraska. The maximum handicap to enter the Senior Open is 3.4 as opposed to the 1.4 maximum to qualify for the U.S. Open. For golfers like me, that's not much of a break. Even with the five extra years golf adds to my life expectancy, you won't see me there anytime soon!
