Local Cub Scouts Race in the Pinewood Derby Championship

On Saturday, April 27, 44 area Cub Scouts raced their Pinewood Derby cars in the Constellation District Pinewood Derby Championship.

The Constellation District Pinewood Derby Championship was held on April 27th at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Broomall, PA. Forty four boys from seventeen different Cub Scout Packs raced their Pinewood Derby cars against the other area winners.

Jackson Harrington, a Tiger Cub from Pack 284 chartered to Wayne Presbyterian Church in Wayne took First Place and was crowned Constellation District Champion for 2013. Taking second place was Matthew Hoban, a Bear from Pack 144 chartered to Saint Denis Roman Catholic Church in Havertown.  Finishing third was Justin Reed, a Webelos 1 from Pack 122 chartered to Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newtown Square.

To compete in the Pinewood Derby, each Cub Scout, with the help of his parents or guardians, builds and decorates a car from a block of wood. The cars are seven inches long, must weigh five ounces or less, and are powered only by gravity.

Despite these restrictions, Pinewood Derby cars can reach speeds up to 20 miles per hour. Local Cub Scout Packs run their own Pinewood Derby races in the early part of the year. The top three finishers from each Pack are invited to compete against the top finishers from all other Packs at the District Championships.

The Constellation District supports Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews in the Haverford, Lower Merion, Marple Newtown and Radnor School Districts. It is one of eleven districts in the Cradle of Liberty Council, which encompasses all of Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.
