Certificate of Appreciation Awarded to Broomall Rotary Club

The Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment, Marine Corps League, recognizes the Rotary Club International for service to the community

On October 31, Marines Earle Drake and Jim Mulhern of the Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment, Marine Corps League headquartered in Newtown Square, attended the Broomall Rotary Club's weekly meeting. At the meeting, held at Charlotte's Restaurant in Newtown Square, Earle and Jim presented a Marine Corps League Certificate of Appreciation to Norman Viss, President of the Broomall Rotary Club. The Rotary Club, as described in its Guiding Principles, provides Rotarians with a strong common purpose and direction. It serves as a foundation for the members relationships with each other and the action they take in the world. It emphasizes, among other principles, service and high ethical standards in business and professions.

The General Smedley D. Butler Detachment, Marine Corps League, provides educational programs for children, historically relevant exhibits in libraries and museums, and Graveside Honor Ceremonies. It also provides financial and other assistance to wounded veterans and their families.

The Marine Corps League was founded in 1923 by WWI Marine hero and then Maj. Gen. and Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, John A. Lejeune. Today the League boasts of a membership in excess of 76,000. Its sponsored programs include Marines Helping Marines, the Youth Physical Fitness Program, the Young Marines of the Marine Corps League, the Veterans Service Officer Program, the Marine Corps League Auxiliary, the Toys for Tots program, the Adopt-a-Highway program, and several scholarships.
