The students participated in Read for the House, which is a service-learning project that raises funds to support the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House through partnerships with local elementary and middle schools. Students combined reading and community service by collecting pledges for their reading minutes during the month of February, the district said.
"Here at Culbertson, we place a strong emphasis on teaching the students the fundamentals of what it takes to be a well-rounded citizen in society," James Wigo Jr., Principal at Culbertson, said. "Read for the House allows students to enjoy reading with the added bonus of helping young children who are not as fortunate as they are."

In three years, Culbertson students have raised $13,483.18 through Read for the House.
"Every February, our students get excited for the opportunity to read to help children who need it the most,” Allison Hostutler, Student Council Advisor and a second-grade teacher, said. "And the students' outreach isn’t limited to February. We’ve held additional events throughout the year to raise funds for this worthy cause."
"These contributions directly benefit the families of the seriously ill children staying with us at PRMH, and the monies raised by Culbertson will help so many staying with us," Maureen Nolan, Special Events Manager for the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, said.
Well done, students!
