Five Guys Burgers and Fries: Consistently Good
This week food writer Clara Park reviews Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Broomall.
BROOMALL–In the film Next Stop Wonderland, the main character (played by Hope Davis) realizes she is part of some twisted male dating game because each of her potential suitors botches the same Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."
All but the last man omit the adjective "foolish" and give credit to the wrong person. Leaving out that one word changes the meaning completely. When I think of , I think of consistency but there is nothing foolish about it. I know that whenever I set foot in one of the brightly lit eateries, I will get a delicious burger and addictive french fries.
I've hit many of the Five Guys in the area but had never been to the Broomall location. Like the other Five Guys, the walls of this location also hold the numerous awards, distinctions, prizes and titles this ridiculously successful burger chain has won. Five Guys locations have won city and state competitions throughout the US. Both the burgers and the fries are considered prize-worthy.

I went in for lunch and ordered a "little burger," regular fries and a regular drink. The single patty of the "little burger" was just perfect that day (when I am famished I'll go for the "regular" with two beef patties). I loaded it up with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, ketchup and mayonnaise and the well done burger was as good as always.
Some people complain that the fully cooked patties are dry but I would advise them to load up on toppings as I always do. The patties are on the thinner side but they taste homemade. When I bite into a Five Guys burger, I feel as though I'm at a cookout in my backyard. It's not a super special enormous burger made with meat from a special cow that's only fed clover and purified water that costs 20 bucks, it's just a solid, tasty burger for an affordable price.

The potatoes for my french fries came from American Falls, ID. I love reading the dry erase board that tells me about my potatoes. It changes daily and goes to show the commitment Five Guys has to making the best french fries.
They also use peanut oil for frying which is both delicious and has a very high smoking point (it can be heated to a very high temperature without smoking/burning). Although peanut oil is not allergen friendly, the abundance of peanuts (you can eat them while you wait) throughout all of the Five Guys locations make the entire chain inaccessible to those who suffer from peanut allergies.
The french fries were piping hot, crisp on the outside and full of Idaho potato flavor. If you're ever in Idaho, make sure to have a plain baked potato because there is nothing plain about it. Freshly dug up Idaho potatoes are simply like eating a potato for the first time, they are that good.
I washed it all down with a cool iced tea (free refills), although, the family of Coca-Cola products and bottled water are also available.
The decor is the familiar red and white of all the other Five Guys location. The lights are quite bright and there are huge windows so you can people watch while you wait for your order.
The service is friendly and polite. The staff here tends to be on the younger side but everyone seems earnest. The food sometimes takes some time to come out but just have a seat and enjoy some peanuts while you wait. The amount of time you wait depends on how busy they are but rest assured your meal will be just as good as it was the last time you were there.
