Gen. S.D. Butler Detachment, Marine Corps League, Awards Pistol Match Certificate

Earle Drake, of Detachment 741, Newtown Square, was presented a Marksmanship Award for his performance at the 2017 Spring Pistol Match

At the May 2 meeting of Newtown Square's General Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Marine and Past Commandant Earle Drake was presented the Marksmanship Award for his outstanding shooting skill at the League's Spring Pistol Match. The match was held on April 23 at the Delaware County Field and Stream. With a score of 361, Earle earned the designation as a Sharpshooter. Other certificates were awarded to Marines Jim Herbst, Bob Spano, and Gene Kern. In all, 26 Marine Corps League members from four Detachments participated in the match. Depicted in the photo is Earle Drake with his award.

The General Smedley D. Butler Detachment provides educational programs for children, historically relevant exhibits in libraries and museums, and Graveside Honor Ceremonies. It also provides financial and other assistance to wounded veterans and their families.

The Marine Corps League was founded in 1923 by WWI Marine hero and then Maj. Gen. and Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, John A. Lejeune. Today the League boasts of a membership in excess of 76,000. Its sponsored programs include Marines Helping Others, the Youth Physical Fitness Program, the Young Marines of the Marine Corps League, the Veterans Service Officer Program, the Marine Corps League Auxiliary, the Toys for Tots program, the Adopt-a-Highway program, and several scholarships.Certificate of Appreciation that was given to Earle Drake for his participation in a pistol match on April 23, 2017 at the Delaware County Field and Stream.
