The Gen. S.D. Butler Detachment Presents Its Americanism Program At The Loomis Elementary School In Broomall

The history of the American Flag was taught to the 5th grade classes. Principal Christine White was present for the program.

The Marines of the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League, headquartered in Newtown Square, regularly make Americanism and Flag History presentations in the elementary schools of Delaware County. On June 5, the Detachment’s Americanism Team of Marines Jim Mulhern, Earle Drake, and Ceremonial Bugler Dan Fitzpatrick made a flag history presentation to two 5th grade classes at the Loomis Elementary School in Broomall. Students were treated to how the flag evolved from its earliest days starting with Britain’s St. Georges Cross flag that explorer John Cabot planted in Labrador on behalf of King Henry VII, to our current flag, “Old Glory”. The history of the Pledge of Allegiance was also part of the program.

The three photos above show the Loomis Elementary School’s fifth grade classes along with Marine Corps Leaguers, center, left to right, Earle Drake, Dan Fitzpatrick (shown presenting a Certificate of Appreciation to Loomis School principal Christine White) and Jim Mulhern. The teachers of the fifth grade classes are at either end of the class.
