Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment Together With The Delaware County Detachment Honor Iwo Jima Survivors

Two Marine Corps League Detachments Recognize and Honor Survivors on the 71st Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima

Each year the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment joins with the Delaware County Detachment of the Marine Corps League to commemorate the battle for Iwo Jima and our Detachments’ Iwo Jima survivors. The commemoration luncheon takes place on the Sunday closest to the Flag raising on Iwo Jima. This year, the 71st anniversary, it took place on February 21. The two Detachments’ members and their guests met at the Delaware County Detachment’s home in Upland, PA.

A luncheon and a festive cake were served the attendees. The costs are shared equally by both Detachments.

This year there were only three survivors of the battle in our Detachments. They are Al MacAuley and Joe Hinderhoffer of the Delaware County Detachment and Lou Camilli of the Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment. At one time there were fifteen Iwo Jima surviving veterans between the two Detachments.
