Members of the Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment, Marine Corps League, visited the former home of our namesake in Newtown Square
On November 10 the United States Marine Corps celebrated it 241st Birthday. The Marine Corps was founded on that date in Philadelphia at Tun Tavern located on the waterfront. As part of the Birthday activities, members of the Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment were invited by Melisa Clarke, the present owner of Gen. Butler's and his wife Edith's former Newtown Square home to visit and see the renovations they have made to the home. Gen. Butler's last surviving granddaughter Philipp came from New York to join the Detachment and the new owner. The top photo is of the General's granddaughter Philippa and current owner Melisa Clarke. The second photo shows the entertainers. The third photo depicts the Marine Birthday cake prepared for the home visit. Photo four shows Butler Detachment Past Commandant Earle Drake performing the honor of cutting the first slice.
