KKK Costumes At Delco School Prompt Apology
Students dressed as KKK members for a history assignment illustrating the historical impact of the 1920s, a Delaware County district said.

A Delaware County School District is "deeply sorry" after photos of students dressed as Ku Klux Klan members for a history project surfaced on social media.
The project, assigned last year in an Upper Darby High School history class, intended to illustrate the historical impact of the 1920s, according to Superintendent Richard F. Dunlap.
"There were skits associated with this project, and a photo of a skit intended to identify and highlight the atrocities of the Ku Klux Klan circulated on social media last evening," Dunlap said in a statement.

The Upper Darby School District "truly regrets" the assignment and the resulting photo, which offended many in the community, Dunlap said.
"Though there was no intention to harm or offend anyone, we recognize that the project was in poor judgment and an inappropriate activity," Dunlap said.

Diversity training with the school board, administration and staff is underway. "We will implement a plan for addressing diversity with our students, as well," Dunlap said.
Dunlap added the district seeks the support of the community" as we attempt to use this as a teachable moment regarding cultural, historical, and racial understanding."
