The Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment Americanism Team makes Flag History presentation to 3rd and 4th graders

On Tuesday November 15, the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment's Americanism/Flag History team made a presentation to the third and fourth graders of the Garnett Valley Elementary School. In excess of 45 students and two teachers participated. Each student received a miniature flag pin, a flag recognition award, and a brochure that described how to treat the flag. The teachers each received a copy of the Constitution.

Earle Drake spoke of the evolution of the American Flag from the days of Christopher Columbus in the late 1400’s to the current 50 star flag. Jim Mulhern told of the war of 1812, Dr. William Beane’s involvement, Francis Scott Key’s composing of the Star Spangled Banner and the Battle of Fort McHenry. Dan Fitzpatrick told of the place the bugle played in battles when the bugle was the major method of communication on the battlefield. Dan then sounded several bugle calls, including "To the Colors", "Retreat", "Reveille", "Mess Call", "Mail Call" and several others.
