Marines Make a Flag and Americanism Presentation to School Students
The Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment, Marine Corps League, Made Two Presentations To 1st and 2nd Graders At Concord Elementary School
The Marines of the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League, headquartered in Newtown Square, regularly make Americanism and Flag History presentations in the elementary schools of Delaware County. On May 21, 2015, the Detachment’s Americanism team of Marines Jim Mulhern and Earle Drake made two flag history presentations to approximately 200 1st and 2nd graders at the Concord Elementary School in Concord. The students were treated to a lesson on how the flag evolved from its earliest days starting with Britain’s St. Georges Cross flag that explorer John Cabot planted in Labrador on behalf of King Henry VII, to our current flag, “Old Glory”. The history of the Pledge of Allegiance was also part of the program.
