Marple, Newtown 2016 Crime Rates According To The FBI

See the rate of violent and property crimes in Marple and Newtown townships from 2016. The numbers may surprise you.

MARPLE-NEWTOWN, PA – The FBI released its 2016 crime report recently, and we have details on crime rates in both Marple and Newtown townships.

The information comes from the FBI’s annual report Crime in the United States. The publication is a statistical compilation of offense, arrest, and police employee data reported by law enforcement agencies voluntarily participating in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, according to the FBI.

According to FBI data, violent crimes went up slightly from 2015 in 2016 in Marple. Data shows five incidents of violent crime in the township were recorded in 2016, while 2015 had nine.

Violent crimes include robbery, aggravated assault, rape, murder/non-negligent manslaughter.

In 2016, Marple saw five aggravated assaults and four robberies. There were no rapes or murders/non-negligent manslaughter incidents.

Regarding property crime, the township saw a drop from 2015 to 2016. FBI data shows 2015 had 322 property crimes, while 2016 saw a drop with 298 reported property crimes.

These crimes include theft/larceny, burglary, arson, and motor vehicle theft.

Marple saw 23 burglaries, 270 thefts/larcenies, 5 vehicle thefts, and no arson cases in 2016.

The theft/larceny incidents saw the biggest change from 2015 to 2016, as data shows 302 incidents were reported in 2015.


Over in Newtown Township, violent crimes and property crimes went up from 2015 to 2016, data shows.

Violent crimes nearly doubled from six in 2015 to 11 in 2016, while property crimes climbed from 2015's 88 to 2016's 94.

Four rapes, four aggravated assaults, and three robberies account for 2016 violent crimes.

As for property crimes, there were 78 theft/larcenies, 12 burglaries, four vehicle thefts, and no arson cases in 2016.

Nationally, the FBI said the 2016 statistics showed an increase in the estimated number of violent crimes, with a 4.1 percent rise when compared with 2015 data. Nationally, property crimes dropped 1.3 percent.

The 2016 statistics show the estimated rate of violent crime was 386.3 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants nationally, and the estimated rate of property crime was 2,450.7 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants. The violent crime rate rose 3.4 percent compared with the 2015 rate, and the property crime rate declined 2.0 percent.

The UCR Program report for 2016 included information from,782 agencies across the country, out of 18,481 city, county, university and college, state, tribal, and federal agencies eligible to participate,
the FBI said.
