Marple Newtown High School highlights the achievements of their winter sports teams and athletes.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–As the winter sports season comes to a close, highlights the achievements of their teams and athletes for a successful season.

Wrestling

The Marple Newtown wrestling team . Aaron Moldoff won his 100th career match in the District Duals Competition. They began sectional competitions at Rustin at on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Cheerleading

Marple Newtown's cheerleading program . The squad has the Central League Championships coming up on March 3rd.

Boys Basketball

The Marple Newtown boys basketball team reached the District 1 AAAA playoffs and traveled to Abington on Friday, Feb. 17, for the first round game. The Tigers (14-9) fell short 43-62 against Abington.

Swimming

Marple Newtown's swim team has had some pool records eclipsed: John Brogan in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.33. He has qualified for districts in multiple events. The Tigers' 200-freestyle relay, and 200 medley also qualified for districts (Pete Tsumakaris, Brian Landi, John Brogan, Luke Megonigal, and Min Sim). Karly Feinberg and Kyle Megonigal also qualified for the districts in diving. Karly Feinberg, Kelcey Tobin, Calie Coghlan, and Mikaela Somma also qualified for the district relay for the 200 freestyle.

Boys Indoor Track

The boys indoor track team won 14 medals at the Delaware County Championships. Marple Newtown took first in the 4x8 relay in the county (Andrew Wyschynskyj, Brian Landi, Matt Sweeney, and Matt Moore). Four athletes qualified for a total of five events at the Meet of Champs at Lehigh University (Brian Landi–800 meters, Matt Sweeney–60 meter hurdles, Daulton Leonard–high jump and triple jump, Joey Pham–triple jump).

Girls Indoor Track

The girls indoor track team earned a few medals in the Novice Championships: Holly Nicolardi for 200 meters, Corinne Huston for the mile and Sue Son for shot put.

Girls Basketball Team

The Marple Newtown girls basketball team has qualified for the District 1 AAA Playoffs and hosted a first round playoff game against Springfield on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The Tigers recently completed a 15-7 regular season as the No. 6 seed in the league, and hosted the first home playoff game for the girls program in years. The team fell short to No. 11 seed Springfield in a 50-41 victory for the Cougars.
