Members of Newtown Square's Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment, Marine Corps League, Recognize Three Marines at the July Meeting

Awards were presented to two Marines for their accomplishments and a third was presented with his Life Membership Gold Card

Jt. Past Commandant Jim Herbst, Chairman of the Awards Committee, presented the Chapel of the 4 Chaplains’ Legion of Honor Award to Jim Mulhern, for his humanitarian efforts.

Jim was a Captain of Marines in Vietnam who directed a series of convoys as they travelled the 30 mile trek from Chu Lai to Quang Nai through Viet Cong infested areas. Years later, Jim is heavily involved in his community. He is executive Chairman of the Marple Youth Aid Program, a program that seeks to help youths from committing serious crimes. He has presided at over 1000 cases during the past 18 years. He was vice president of the Marple Township Optimist Club, vice president of the Upper Darby Rotary Club, past president of the South Marple Little League, and Past Director of Development of Philadelphia Children Service, Inc.

Jim is a regular participant in the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment’s Americanism/Flag History Program that is presented in elementary schools, to business association meetings, Senior Citizen groups and to children enrolled in summer camper programs at the Rocky Run YMCA. He is a pre-school and after school counselor sponsored by the YMCA for the past 5 years. He helps the children with their homework, reads them stories and generally supervises their activities. He has been counselor of the month on two occasions. He has a great interest in helping, training and advising youngsters that goes back to his own experience as a youth at Big Brothers of Philadelphia.

Marine Bob Cosgrove received a Meritorious Commendation Award for his Chairmanship of the Detachment’s Toys for Tots program for many years. Toys for Tots is the Marine Corps Reserve sponsored nation wide program that collects toys for distribution to children during the December holiday season, which children might otherwise not receive one. Under Bob’s leadership, the program was very successful and hundreds of children received toys annually.

Marine Steve Kusner received his Life Membership card. The Gold Life Membership card recognizes Steve’s commitment to the Marine Corps League and the Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment.
