New Grading System OKed In Marple Newtown Secondary Schools: Report

Find out how next year's grades will be calculated.

The Marple Newtown School Distinct School Board approved a new grading system for secondary schools in the district that will be implements in the 2017-2018 school year.

High schoolers in the district will be graded on a 4.3 point scale starting with the class of 2021.

Students will still get weighted and unweighted GPAs, meaning the course difficulty is factored into the GPA, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

The new grading scale is as follows:

  • A – 90-100;
  • B – 80-89;
  • C – 70-79;
  • D – 60-69;
  • F – 59 or lower.

"Sub" grades will also be incorporated into the new 10-point scale. For example, an "A+" will be 98-100, "A" 94-97, and "A-" 90-93, according to the Times.

The old system was an 8-point scale, that put As into a 92 to 100 point range, Bs into 91-84, Cs 83-76, Ds 75-70, and F 69 and below.
