This photo just arrived in my in box, courtesy of our friend in Marple, Rich Paul. There once was a hotel in Newtown Square - on the NWC of West Chester Pike and Rt. 252. A hotel was at that site from about 1788 (known as Beaumont's Tavern and the Wagon Wheel); it was re-built in 1903 and that is the building shown here. The Hotel was the beating heart of the community for most of 200 years. It survived until 1969 when it was torn down to make way for the small bank building that remains today.
A picture is worth a thousand words: Frank E. Coyne, Proprietor; Scheidt's Beer; the old technology - carriage sheds, and the new - the early model cars. Men on the front porch; looks like women upstairs; "Chicken and Waffle Dinners our Specialty". A different world.
We are always on the lookout for old photos like this of the community. If you have them, we'd be glad to scan them for you to add to our collection.
