PennDOT To Address Deteriorated Delaware County Roads Next Week​

Recent harsh winter weather has taken a toll on roads in the greater Philadelphia area, and PennDOT is mobilizing crews to address issues.

With harsh winter weather comes increasingly damaged roads. Snow melts, then refreezes, then melts, and refreezes, then melts... You get the idea. All that freezing and refreezing on roads causes existing cracks and potholes to become even more problematic for drivers and their vehicles.

And the recent cold and warm temperature cycles in the Philadelphia area have led PennDOT to mobilize crews across the region to address the deteriorated highways, including roads throughout Delaware County.

Among the 70 state highways being taken care of by PennDOT maintenance and contractor crews next week are 20 roads in the Delco. They are:

  • Interstate 95 in Tinicum, Ridley, Chester, Upper Chichester, Lower Chichester townships, Upland Borough, City of Chester;
  • U.S. 1 in Concord, Chadds Ford townships;
  • U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue) in Radnor, Haverford townships
  • U.S. 202 in Chads Ford, Thornbury townships;
  • U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) in Bethel, Upper Chichester townships;
  • Rose Valley Road in Swarthmore, Rose Valley boroughs;
  • Garnet Mine Road in Bethel, Upper Chichester townships;
  • Pyle Road in Bethel Township;
  • Beaver Valley Road in Concord Township;
  • Bethel Avenue in Upper Chichester Township;
  • Chester Road in Swarthmore Borough;
  • Route 320 in Swarthmore Borough;
  • Route 420 in Tinicum Township, Prospect Park Borough;
  • Providence Road in Aldan, Lansdowne boroughs;
  • Oak Avenue/Hook Road in Upper Darby, Darby townships, Sharon Hill Borough;
  • Bishop Avenue in Upper Darby Township;
  • State Road, Drexel Hill, Upper Darby townships;
  • Darby Road in Haverford Township;
  • Lansdowne Avenue in Upper Darby Township; and
  • Baltimore Pike in Clifton Heights Borough.

The patching operations, which are weather dependent, will result in traffic slowdowns and backups as lane closures will be in effect where state and contractor crews are working, PennDOT said.

"Extreme fluctuations in temperatures coupled with an active snow season is causing an early outbreak of potholes in the Philadelphia region, especially on older roadway surfaces," PennDOT District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain said. “We encourage the public to report pothole locations to our toll-free number or online, so crews can schedule repairs as quickly as possible."
