Stratford Friends School Students Getting Daily Occupational Therapy In 2017

The school will "fully integrate occupational therapy into students' daily curriculum" to help them practice skills even more.

Stratford Friends School in Newtown Square is taking another step to serve its learning disabled students in 2017, as it will begin offering occupational therapy to students starting in the fall of 2017.

According to the school, in the fall it will roll out its "Shine Bright" curriculum for Kindergarten through 8th grade students which will put occupational therapy into the student's daily learning.

"This makes SFS the only independent school in the region integrating OT into the current academic, speech and language and social/emotional curriculum," the school said in a release. "The integrated curriculum will allow students to practice and learn the skills they need in their everyday routine rather than just a therapy room."

The school said receiving occupational therapy will help its students learn and strengthen motor, social emotional and cognitive skills. OT will also help students development the ability to interpret sensory input and information.

"The powerful difference is how our Occupational, therapist, Speech and Language therapist, and School Psychologist will work together with our amazing classroom teachers to seamlessly implement the best practices in all aspects of the school day," said Jill Dougherty, Stratford Friends School Head of School. "We are growing our program to include what students need to celebrate their strengths, build self-esteem, and develop self-advocacy, as they become strong independent learners."
