Mechanicsburg Student Finalist In National STEM Contest (iheart.com) — A Mechanicsburg eighth grader at Mountain View Middle School has been named a finalist in a prestigious national STEM competition, earning a trip to Washington, D.C. next month. Her slow-dissolving antacid project, inspired by her grandfather's heartburn, is among 30 nationwide vying for major scholarship prizes and recognition, spotlighting local students' growing role in cutting-edge science.
2. Pa. will get over $500 million in Meta settlement. Now it has to decide how to spend it. (pennlive.com) — Pennsylvania is set to receive at least $500 million from a settlement with Meta, and local leaders are debating how to direct the money toward youth mental health and school programs. Mechanicsburg Area School District's superintendent stresses that, despite hiring more counselors and psychologists, student needs are outpacing resources, leaving districts at a crossroads as county services shrink.
3. Farm Credit Foundation to Award More Than $350,000 in Scholarships to Future Agricultural Professionals (americanagnetwork.com) — Students in and around Mechanicsburg eyeing agricultural careers can now apply for Farm Credit Foundation's 2027 scholarships, with at least $350,000 available and individual awards up to $10,000. High school seniors and college or trade students in Horizon Farm Credit's territory, including much of Pennsylvania, can submit online applications through January 8, 2027.
4. NHL preseason hockey returns to Hershey as Capitals down Flyers, 5-2 (fox43.com) — Central Pennsylvania hockey fans packed Hershey's GIANT Center to watch the Washington Capitals beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 in a preseason matchup, with at least one fan traveling in from nearby Mechanicsburg. The game highlighted Hershey's growing role as a regular NHL preseason stop and gave locals an early look at former Bears now skating for the Capitals.
