Separate Scams Target Delco Residents; 1 Victim Lost Thousands Of Dollars: Police

MEDIA, PA — Two Delaware County residents were targeted in separate scams, including one that cost a victim thousands of dollars, authorities said.

The scams were reported separately at the State Police station in Media on Friday.

Here's what State Police said about each incident:

Sheriff Scam

In one incident, the scammer impersonated law enforcement and bilked a Middletown Township resident out of $8,400.

The individual contacted the victim and identified themselves as a deputy sheriff named "Taylor." The victim was told he missed a hearing and needed to pay $8,400 to avoid arrest.

The victim withdrew the money and deposited it into a Bitcoin machine at the scammer's request.

Geek Squad Impersonator

Another Delco resident nearly lost $15,000 to someone impersonating Geek Squad — Best Buy's repair service.

The scammer(s) used the name "Samuel Harvey." After gaining access to the victim's computer, "Harvey" transferred $15,000 from the victim's saving account to the victim's checking account.

The victim, a Chadds Ford resident, was told that someone would stop by his house to collect $15,000 in cash. But the process stopped there, and the victim didn't lose any money.

Police didn't say how the victim was contacted.

State Police are investigating both incidents.
