SWARTHMORE, PA — Starting in fall 2027, Swarthmore College plans to cover tuition for domestic students from families earning $200,000 or less, the institution announced.
The "Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee" will cover students whose families have a household income of $200,000 or less and has typical assets, the college says. Students must apply for financial aid to qualify.
"At Swarthmore, a student's intellectual curiosity, creativity and talent decide what's possible — not whether they can afford college," said Swarthmore College President Valerie Smith.
Tuition cost $68,766 at the small, private college this year.
The tuition guarantee doesn't apply to attendance costs, such as housing and food, which cost $21,926. But the school says some students can get those costs covered through financial aid.
International students, who make up 15 percent of the student body, are ineligible for the tuition guarantee.
