CHESTER, PA — Multiple shootings plagued Chester on Tuesday, killing two people and critically injuring another victim, according to Mayor Stefan Roots.
A Chester Police officer was also attacked while responding to a domestic call earlier that day, Roots said. The officer was treated at the hospital and released.
"Yesterday was an incredibly tragic and challenging day for our city, marked by multiple acts of violence that have deeply impacted our community," Roots said.
The officer was trying to manage a domestic incident when they were attacked, Roots said. The officer was treated at the hospital for lacerations.
The attacker was subdued at the scene, Roots said. Authorities are pursuing involuntary mental-health evaluation during the ongoing investigation.
Roots didn't say whether the suspect was involved in the domestic incident.
Separate shootings also killed two people and left another victim fighting for recovery on Tuesday, Roots said.
No other details about the shootings were immediately available.
"These acts of violence are heartbreaking and serve as another painful reminder of the ongoing challenges facing our community and the devastating consequences violence continues to have on individuals, families, and neighborhoods," Roots said in a statement.
The mayor urged people with information to alert law enforcement.
"At the same time, we want residents to know that there are resources available for those struggling with mental health challenges, addiction, domestic abuse, grief, and other difficult circumstances," Roots said. "Organizations such as the Domestic Abuse Project, Chester Community Coalition, and many other local partners are working every day to support individuals and families in need."
