Maris Grove Resident Volunteers Help New Neighbors Feel Right at Home

Residents Eleanor Wilson, Judy Hayes, and Donna Terribile help new neighbors feel right at home with the Connector Program at Maris Grove

Moving to a new home is an exciting milestone, but it can also come with a fair share of questions.

At Maris Grove, the Erickson Senior Living community in the Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania, new residents have a lot of help and support. Thanks to the resident-led Connector Program, newcomers are met with friendly faces, helpful guidance, and an immediate sense of belonging.

The Connector Program pairs each new resident with a volunteer Connector--fellow residents who know the campus, understand community life, and enjoy helping others settle in. From answering practical questions to making social introductions, the Connectors play a vital role in helping new neighbors feel at home as soon as they move in.

Neighbors helping neighbors

The Connector Program began several years ago with a simple goal of helping new residents feel at home as quickly as possible. Today, the program includes 44 resident volunteers who serve as friendly guides during those first important weeks.

Led by residents Eleanor Wilson and Judy Hayes, the program is rooted in warmth, consistency, and genuine care. Inspired by their own move-in experiences, both women recognize the impact of a meaningful personal welcome.

Judy notes that the strength of the program lies in its people. "The Connectors are the heart and soul of this program," she says. "We couldn't do it without them. Everyone involved truly believes in what Maris Grove offers."

A warm welcome

For resident Donna Terribile, the Connector Program made all the difference when she made the move to Maris Grove in March 2023 from Avondale, Pa.

"My Connector showed me around and helped me get involved right away," Donna recalls. "Everybody is so friendly here, and the feeling is overwhelmingly warm and welcoming."

That early experience left a lasting impression. After settling in and finding her footing, Donna felt inspired to give back by becoming a Connector herself.

"I wanted everyone to experience what I did," she says. "I decided I wanted to do the same thing for others in my community."

Giving back

As a Connector, Donna focuses on relationships.

"I invite new residents to dinner," she explains. "Dinner is a very important part of a community like this. It's such an easy way to socialize and get to know people."

Donna also takes time to learn about each person's interests. With more than 160 clubs and groups at Maris Grove, there's truly something for everyone, from card games and fitness classes to creative and cultural pursuits.

"If someone tells me what they enjoy, I can help connect them to a campus club or even reach out to a club leader on their behalf," Donna says. "Once someone reaches out to you personally, it's much easier to get involved."

Support and encouragement

In addition to social introductions, Connectors also help new residents understand how day-to-day life works at Maris Grove. From dining options and reservations to helpful tools like the My Erickson app, these early conversations can build confidence.

In recent years, the community introduced a simple but effective touch that helps new residents feel welcome. They wear a blue "New Resident" ribbon on their badge, making it easier for neighbors and staff members to offer a warm hello.

"It really helps start conversations," Judy notes. "You can't walk down the hallway without someone saying hello, and that's exactly the culture we hope to foster."

A culture of care

When asked what advice she gives new residents, Donna keeps it simple and encouraging.

"Get out of your residence every day," she says. "Take a walk, see what people are doing, and get involved. Socialization is extremely important, and it's entirely up to you how active you want to be."

That philosophy reflects the broader mission of the Connector Program, which focuses on offering support in ways that feel natural and comfortable.

For Eleanor and Judy, leading the Connector Program is meaningful and deeply rewarding.

"It's a win-win," Judy says. "We get to meet new people all the time, and we know we're helping them feel at home."

Eleanor adds that the program reflects the spirit of Maris Grove as a whole. "As soon as my husband and I walked in, we knew this was the place we wanted to live," she says. "The environment is welcoming, and management is incredibly supportive. The Connector Program is just one example of how residents and staff work together to create a kind, caring community."

Forming connections

As new residents make Maris Grove their home, the Connector Program remains a cornerstone of community life, showing that meaningful welcome often begins with a simple invitation from a neighbor who says, "Come sit with me."
