MEDIA, PA — The annual Media Santa Parade has been canceled and retired after more than a decade — unless new blood carries on the Christmastime tradition.
The Santa Parade, which also featured a fun run and block party, kicked off Media's holiday season for over a decade. But the event is set to no longer happen because of funding issues, according to the Media Santa Parade Committee.
"Rising costs associated with entertainment, musical acts, logistics, and event operations have created significant financial challenges in recent years," the committee announced. "Despite our best efforts, we are unable to secure the resources necessary to move forward with this year's events."
A team of four volunteers has organized the Santa Parade throughout its duration, according to the committee. Sponsorships and donations have funded the event.
But the event could continue if someone else takes over the planning.
"This was not a decision we made lightly, and we are deeply saddened to take this step," the committee said. "Should someone be interested in carrying these traditions forward, the Parade Committee would be happy to provide guidance, resources, and support to help ensure their continued success."
Several commenters expressed sadness about the announcement and offered to help continue the tradition.
"I remember when this began," one commenter said. "It was so much fun to bring my littles to when they were young. Sad to see it ending."
"I’m sad to see this end. Thank you for all you’ve done!!" said another reply. "If nothing else maybe just go back to having Santa ride on the fire truck down State St and have the buildings light up as he goes by!"
