The Penncrest/Media Alumni Association donated
to the Penncrest High School Library a copy of Black Gold – The African
American Athlete at Media High School 1915-1966. Author, John “Jack” Lemon is a 1964 graduate
of Media High School, where he was a star athlete. In 1964, the Delaware County Board of School Directors
released a plan that called for the union of the Media Borough and Rose Tree
Union School Districts into a single school district. The merger was instituted July 1, 1966 and Media
High School became a junior high school facility, with Penncrest as the high
school serving the district. Black Gold
is Mr. Lemon’s landmark tribute to the pioneering achievements of the Black
male and female athletes of Media High School.
The donation to the Penncrest library will enable students to learn
about over five decades of scholastic, athletic excellence. Black Gold is an example of 20th
Century African-American cultural literature and sports history. For more information visit www.africanamericanathleteatmediahighschool.com
