April 29: CASA Youth Advocates Announces 3rd Annual 5K Run/Walk

Calling all superheroes to run, walk, or fly in our 5K!

Media, PA, March 20, 2018 – On Sunday, April 29, at 9:00 a.m. at Ridley Creek State Park in Media, runners and walkers dressed in superhero costumes will gather in support of CASA Youth Advocates, a Media, PA-based organization whose mission is to champion children in Delaware and Chester counties’ child welfare systems.

“This is quickly becoming our favorite event of the year – it’s exciting to see everyone come out on a Sunday morning, put on a superhero costume, and show their commitment to being champions for children in their communities. All children need a hero, but abused and neglected children need a superhero,” said CASA Youth Advocates Executive Director Leigh Anne McKelvey.

CASA Youth Advocates recruits, trains, and supports volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates who work to ensure that abused and neglected children in Delaware and Chester Counties’ child welfare systems find a safe, permanent, and nurturing home.

CASA served 206 of our region’s vulnerable children in 2017, nearly doubling the number of cases served in the last ten years, yet that is still less than 20% of the children who could benefit from the support of a CASA volunteer. That’s where fundraising events like the 3rd Annual Superhero 5K Run and Walk play an important role.

Emmy Award winning FOX29 News Reporter Chris O’Connell will join us again during this year’s festivities to help us kick-off the start of the race. He adds, “CASA Youth Advocates does some amazing work. They are the unsung heroes to our most vulnerable children.”

CASA is also excited to welcome newly appointed Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun Copeland at the race.

Each 5K registrant receives a t-shirt, refreshments, water stations, and prizes. The event includes awards for the top overall male and female race finishers, overall age group winners, best costume (for both humans and pets) and top sponsors. Timing and logistics will be coordinated by Bryn Mawr Racing Company.

Event registration is $30 for adults and $15 for children 7-17 before April 22, 2018; $40 for adults and $20 for children 7-17 after April 22, 2018, including the day of the race. All children 6 and under are free.
