I found myself in Media Borough twice this week to shop for gifts. Both times I ended up coming home with a nifty little paper bag of loveliness from on State Street.
The first time I was rushing into town to find a necklace - had to be "blue like a swimming pool"- as a birthday gift for my little guy's swim teacher and my best friend. The perfect swimming pool jewel was waiting and in the $60 budget! The shop girl gave advice on chain length and another customer even tried it on for me (gotta love everybody's hometown).

Tonight, with 11 minutes until closing time, my little guy and I were greeted warmly by another shopgirl and not for one moment hurried as he ponderously laid out AT LEAST TWENTY nearly identical $3 string friendship bracelets. He then weighed the various merits and drawbacks to each as a gift for his favorite camp counselor. The shopgirl was just the right amount interested in his decision and then approvingly congratulatory in an uncondescending way when he made his choice.
The capper was that when we walked out the door the little guy said, "Why are we leaving?" I'm delighted at the promise that he was not instantly bored by this girlfriend-y place! Maybe next time something for myself...

(And I should probably mention that I'm glad to learn, belatedly, that the shop is part of the Fair Trade Federation - so my little guy isn't choosing from gifts made on the cheap labor of other little guys. You can read more about that and watch a YouTube video on their website: http://www.kutamediapa.com/index.html).
