New Sleeping Beauty Comes to Media Theatre
An old classic set to new pop music by local author/composers the Kiehners, of Media

There’s a beauty coming to Media, but she may not be awake the entire time. It’s Sleeping Beauty in a new musical adaptation by Laura and Tricia Kiehner of Wallingford. The hour long show has Princess Aurora, the beauty, cursed by a Mean Queen named Geraldine. In this version, audiences will see the Princess as a young girl before she pricks her finger on the spinning wheel, falling into a long slumber. The show plays weekends April 7 to May 25 at .
The lead roles in the show are double cast with members of the theatre’s New School, a conservatory style approach to music theatre education. Two young actresses from Media, Megan Greer and Sarah Liney, portray Princess Aurora as a teen. Others in the cast are Beada Briglia and Brianna Mazzola as young Aurora; Aidan Cole and Karl Meyer as Prince William; Andrew Moretti and JD Triolo as Young William; Blake Jelus and Marie Sminkey as The Mean Queen; Giacoma Fizzano and Owen Mannion as King Anton; and Anna Garson and Erika Roberts as Queen Patrice. Maid Cecilia is portrayed by Katejoulie Carney and Amber Duncan.
Trudy Graboyes, who recently directed Aladdin at Swarthmore Players Club and was seen in The Media Theatre’s Annie, directs the show. Mike Malloy, of the Delaware County pop/rock group Old Man Cactus, music directs with Patrick Murray’s choreography.

The Kiehners’ version of Sleeping Beauty gives insight to reasons the Mean Queen decided to put a curse on the beautiful Princess, rather than simply stating the obvious. Mean Queen Geraldine longs for a love she could not find, feeling left out of many positive things life has to offer and in a jealous rage places Aurora in a deep sleep. The Princess can only be awakened by true love, as the Mean Queen feels that true love is hard to find.
The show, for ages 4 and up, has plenty of comedy and a large ensemble. There are animals that run through the audience and a magic trunk filled with props that assist in telling the story.

The cast performed at The Rotary Club of Media's Pancake Day on March 24. Here's the link to that performance (this was done after only two days of rehearsal, and with a substitute pianist...not too shabby!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAPz59msbSw
