Paxon Hollow Golf Course Hosts 2011 Delco Senior Games Golf Tournament

The Paxon Hollow Golf Course, located in Marple Township in Media, was a sponsor of the 2011 Delaware County Senior Games Golf Tournament on June 22. This public golf course, one of the most beautiful landscapes in the state, provided a day of recreation and camaraderie for more than 144 seniors who live or work in our region.

Players showed up as early as 7 a.m., even though there were cloudy skies and a light drizzle. The staff warned players of a chance of passing rain showers. Minutes before the 8 a.m. start time, the skies opened up and it poured rain. Players waited out the rain and suddenly clouds gave way to sun and it turned out to be a wonderful day for golf.

I had an opportunity to play with gentlemen I met for the first time at the tournament. Although more than 10 years my senior, each of the men had scores much better than mine! Since the course was wet following the rain, carts could not leave the cart path. Most seniors walked much more than the average teenager does in a day.

The senior games ended June 24. They will be followed with an awards ceremony for all participants on July 7, at the Drexelbrook Conference Center.

Although I do not have a photo of myself, the profile photo that is on my Senior News blog was taken this April of 2011 at St. Andrews Old Course in Scotland. For those of you who may not know, that was one of the first golf courses in the world on the coast of Scotland and the North Sea. It dates from about 1754 and is the home of the governing body of golf, for most of the world. In fact, the reason golf is called "the links" is because when looking at the golf course on the coast from a boat, the greens and fairways looked like links of a chain. Though I played there, I enjoyed the match at Paxon Hollow more.
