Hedgerow Theatre describes this play as follows:
"Sojourner is the story of Sojourner Truth: a young girl sold at auction to a succession of slave masters, not in the American South, but in the North. Sojourner is a compelling look at pre-Civil War America, and the shameful policies and culture that led to the most devastating of American conflicts. Sojourner is a coming-of-age narrative filled with heartbreaking cruelty and violence, but also with warmth, love, and humor. It is a story that takes an unflinching look at the hard truths of American history. It is a story of the values and conditions that shaped America. And it is a story of one unconquerable spirit."
Sojourner first premiered at Hedgerow Theatre, starring Zuhairah McGill, who garnered a Barrymore Best Actress nomination for her excellent performance.
