Ex-Elwyn Employee Stole From Clients, Police Say

A former Elwyn employee stole thousands of dollars from 19 Elwyn client accounts, according to State Police.

Jennifer MacAvoy, 41, of Millville, N.J. was charged with theft and receiving stolen property in District Court 32-2-48 on Feb. 28.

MacAvoy was arraigned on the charges on Monday, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

MacAvoy is accused of stealing about $19,000 from numerous victims' accounts over the course of several months, according to State Police.

Elwyn is an adult support center providing safe programs and different levels of care to promote quality of life and enhance independence.

While employed at Elwyn, between November 2011 and August 2012, MacAvoy's position allowed her authorization to withdraw and deposit money into Elwyn client accounts to utilize funds on their behalf, according to State Police.

MacAvoy used the money for her own purposes instead of on behalf of the clients, according to State Police.

According to the Delco Times, MacAvoy abruptly resigned from her job in August and never returned to Elwyn, at which time an internal investigation was launched and no receipts or documentation could be found to show how MacAvoy had spent the clients’ money.

MacAvoy surrendered to police on Monday and was released on 10 percent of $15,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for March 13 before Magisterial District Judge Walter Strohl.
