Exactly one week after giving birth to her son, Kylo, Fatemata returned to school, determined to become a LPN.

Fatemata was not going to let anything get in the way of her LPN journey at Delaware County Technical Schools’ (DCTS) Practical Nursing Program, even giving birth. On March 13, roughly seven months into the 12-month-long program, Fatemata gave birth to her son, Kylo. Exactly one week later, Fatemata returned to school and picked up where she left off.

In addition to being the mother to a newborn, she is also the mother to a five-year-old boy, Carter. When asked how she was able to return to school almost immediately after giving birth, Fatemata points to her amazing support system.

“I have lots of help from my family. My husband is the biggest reason why I can attend school. He has been a tremendous help with taking on a lot, all while making sure I have time to study and get school work completed,” said Fatemata.

Having worked in previous healthcare settings, Fatemata knew that she wanted to pursue a nursing career. Before setting her sights on becoming a LPN, she was enrolled in Delaware County Community College’s RN program, but unfortunately, it did not go as planned. Not wanting to waste any more time, Fatemata began researching LPN programs and stumbled across DCTS’ program.

With a few months of schooling left, Fatemata looks ahead and is eager to begin her career in the workforce once she passes her NCLEX-PN. She also encourages other mothers interested in pursuing a career in nursing to take the leap of faith. It may be a scary proposition, to spend time away from family to pursue a new career, but the final result makes it all worth it.

“If you are looking into going to nursing school, definitely make sure you have a great support team to help with children and outside life. I would also tell her to be prepared to miss out on some moments,” said Fatemata, “You may feel like you’re less of a mom because you aren’t as present, but always remember that in the end, it will pay off and your family will have a better future.”
