Sinkhole Opens Near Mariner East Pipeline In Delco Wednesday

A 36-squre-foot hole formed near the Troop K State Police Barracks in Middletown Township Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — A sinkhole opened up in Delaware County along the Mariner East pipeline route Wednesday, April 24, according to officials.

Middletown Township Manager Andrew S. Haines said in a letter to residents that the sinkhole opened up at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near Troop K State Police Barracks, on the south side of Baltimore Pike.

The estimated size of the hole is about 36 square feet, officials said.

"This area in question is at or near the end of the Sunoco HDD 610 section, and Sunoco reported this finding to the Pennsylvania Utility Commission (PUC)," Haines said in the letter.

Authorities are investigating the collapse.
