Teacher Spotlight: Denny Smyth

This gifted support teacher works at Indian Lane Elementary School and Media Elementary School.

Teacher Spotlight is where we will feature a local teacher who deserves recognition. Teachers give a lot to their students, schools and studies and we'd like to recognize them and say a simple, thank you, for all that they do. As students get back into the swing of things this school year, we'd like you to meet one of Rose Tree Media School District's newest teachers.

This elementary school teacher worked with at-risk youth before coming to RTMSD last year.

Years in the industry: Six years

Teaching History:

Smyth worked with at-risk youth in alternative school settings in Montgomery County and Bucks County. Last year was his first year in RTMSD.

Why did you become a teacher:

I started counseling at-risk youth and working with teachers closely in the school setting. I immediately decided that's what I wanted to do, so I went back and got my teaching certification at the University of Pennsylvania.

What do you like most about your job:

Every day is a new learning experience, no day is the same. I also like sharing my love of learning with students and watching them grow throughout the year.

What do you hope your students get out of your classes:

They're being challenged everyday, and that they feel safe and comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas.

If you could change anything about education, what would it be:

The inequality between schools. I wish every child could have the same opportunity and resources available to them.

What do you like best about your current school:

It was evident from the first day that it's a team atmosphere with the staff. The parent involvement is phenomenal and something I've never experienced. It's a caring and nurturing learning environment provided for the students.
