Grade/Subject: English for grades 10, 11 and 12
Years in the industry: One year
Teaching History:
Rizzone worked at Verizon for 30 years and retired in 2009. She then went back to school and got her master's degree, going to school full-time for a year. She student-taught at Marple Newtown High School for a year and then came to Penncrest.
Why did you become a teacher:
I had a really satisfying career at Verizon, but I wanted to do something meaningful. I wanted to contribute and I think education is one of the most important things in a child's life.
What do you like most about your job:
I think what I like about it is that every day is a do-over and brings something new. One day might not go well, but the next day is a fresh slate.
What do you hope your students get out of your classes:
My primary goal is to prepare students for the literary requirements beyond the classroom. They also need to know how to communicate effectively, so I hope to bring a little real-world experience to the table and make class more meaningful for them.
If you could change anything about education, what would it be:
I'm envious of the student's access to so much information in today's Internet world. I want students to understand that technology is a tremendous and powerful tool, but it's not a substitute for all other sources of learning and information. Technology is an aid, but must be used wisely.
What do you like best about your current school:
I think the students are fabulous. They're bright, energetic, it's a great environment to be around.
