Trash Truck Fire In Media Caused By Lithium-Ion Batteries: Officials
Firefighters reminded residents that lithium-ion batteries shouldn't be thrown out in household trash.
MEDIA, PA — Lithium-ion batteries sparked a fire Monday in a Media garbage truck, prompting firefighters to remind residents of their dangers.
A fire was reported inside a garbage truck around 6:45 a.m. at 4th and Edgemont streets, according to Media Fire Hook and Ladder #1. It self-extinguished before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters then followed the truck to the borough garage, where its contents were emptied. They discovered two lithium-ion battery packs that had ignited inside the trash.

Firefighters put out the remaining fire.
"This incident serves as an important reminder that lithium-ion batteries should not be disposed of in household trash," the fire company said. "Batteries should always be removed from tools or appliances before disposal. Many retailers, including Home Depot and Lowe’s, offer recycling drop-off locations where batteries can be safely disposed of."
