Local Company Sets Example for Corporate Volunteerism

Lutheran Service Society officials are delighted to report that Eaton has stepped up their involvement in the nonprofit’s Meals On Wheels program by committing to volunteer an additional 12 days this year, for a total of 76 delivery dates scheduled in 2013.

“This level of commitment from a large company like Eaton is unusual,” states John Dickey, president and CEO, Lutheran Service Society.  “It shows that the employees of Eaton and the company’s leadership truly understand that Meals On Wheels is about more than the meals being delivered – it’s the connection of neighbors serving neighbors.  Their involvement has been, and continues to be, a tremendous blessing to the community.”

Employees at the Eaton facility located in Cherrington Business Park, Moon Township, part of Eaton’s Electrical Sector, deliver a Meals On Wheels route every Wednesday and two Thursdays each month.  The additional dates were added to accommodate the growing number of employees willing and able to contribute their time.

“Our employees are proud to be part of the Meals On Wheels effort that Lutheran Service Society has established,” said Kevin McLean, vice president, Pricing, for Eaton. “Many of us have so much to be thankful for and this is a way for us to give back. It is so rewarding to all of us to see the smiles and genuine appreciation when we deliver a meal.”  McLean has been volunteering with the program for over two years.

Kelly Waldron, Eaton’s Meals On Wheels coordinator, reports that 55 employees took time from their busy work schedules in 2012 to volunteer with Meals on Wheels, and it took only a few weeks for the 2013 sign-up sheet to be filled.  “Each year, our volunteerism increases significantly,” states Waldron.  The Electrical Sector’s volunteer program has grown from completing eight delivery dates in 2005 to more than 75 dates scheduled for 2013.

“I always tell the volunteers they will not be disappointed, because not only are you giving back to your community, you are brightening someone’s day.”

“Thousands of lives are touched each year by the generosity displayed by Eaton and its volunteers,” states Patty Davidson, chief development officer for Lutheran Service Society.  “Eaton’s desire to give back to the community extends beyond their monetary support.  The fact that the company allows its employees to leave work during the day to volunteer – and that so many employees take this opportunity – says a lot.”

It costs Lutheran Service Society more than $1,800 to serve one person in the Meals On Wheels program for one year.  The agency raises money for residents who are unable to personally contribute towards the cost of receiving their meals.  In addition to its weekly volunteer support, Eaton has issued grants for the Meals On Wheels program each year since 2006.  This year’s endowment of $5,250 is being used to provide hot, nutritious meals to individuals in need.
