We citizens of Sharon village changed our name to Carnot in 1877. Sadi Carnot, as most of us living in 1877 know, died 45 years ago. Cholera was the cause, so most of his belongings and scientific papers were buried with him. It was how they tried to control epidemics back in 1832. Those were the days of steam engines-no one had a scientific understanding of steam engines until Sadi Carnot wrote a paper in 1824. Of course, his contemporaries ignored it. But later the paper was used to found the science of thermodynamics. And helped create the diesel engine.
You may ask why we citizens chose the name of a French engineer. Well, we think the Suez Canal, opened 8 years ago, is an outstanding example of French engineering supremacy. Now we hear M. de Lessups is planning a canal across Panama! Now the French and American people are jointly building a monument to Liberty for the US centennial. We living here in Carnot contributed a little to building the base, as did a lot of Americans. So the name of french scientist and the father of thermodynamics, Sadi Carnot, suits us just fine.
Carnot citizen, 1877.
2013 comment: Sadi Carnot's nephew, also known as Sadi, was also an engineer. He became President of France in 1887, 10 years after we selected the name of our village.
