Cluck, Cluck: Take a Tour of Sewickley's Chicken Coops

A dozen sites are on the annual Sewick's Chicks tour.

AsΒ theΒ backyard chicken movement grows, so does the interest in coops, breeds andΒ eggs.Β Β

The public will have a chance to get a closer look on Sunday, Sept. 8Β when the third annualΒ Sewick's Chicks tour returns to the Sewickley Valley.Β

TheΒ event runs from from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. andΒ features a dozen sites on theΒ tour.Β

Coops are located in Sewickley, Sewickley Heights and Edgeworth, where owners will be available to answer questions and talk about their birds.

The event isΒ co-sponsored by The Italian Garden Project andΒ Fern Hollow Nature CenterΒ with aΒ portion of proceeds benefitting theΒ Sewickley Community Center Food Bank.

Mary Menniti of the Italian Garden Project said participants will be given a sticker to wear during the self-guided tour and a booklet withΒ addresses and suggested routes, allowingΒ participants are able toΒ visit the sitesΒ at their ownΒ leisure.Β

Much like backyard chicken keeping, the annualΒ tourΒ has increasedΒ in popularity.

Organizers previously estimated about 20 people attendedΒ the first year. Last year,Β about 80 adults and children attended. It's a safe bet there will beΒ more flocking to attendΒ this year.Β
