Moon Football Readies for Season Opener

Coach Mark Washington gives fans a look ahead at what they can expect this season.

Mark Washington, new head football coach, said accountability has been a central theme of the team’s summer training.

“Our motto is one unit, one team, one heartbeat,” Washington said.

The team is a work in progress and is still adapting to recent coaching changes, but fans should expect to see a Moon team that’s prepared and ready for game day, said Washington, who formerly was Aliquippa's coach.

“These guys are really competitive. They want to work and get it done,” he said.

Offensively the team is returning a core group of running backs and receivers. Junior quarterback Caleb Jackiel, who passed about 700 yards last season, is expected to emerge as a leader for the Tigers.

Meanwhile, the offensive line is working to come together early in the season. Washington described the line as “kind of thin, but we’ll get it done. Some guys are stepping up.”

Defensively, senior inside linebackers Dan Dellovade and Ben Dunning will lead Moon. Coaches say the team’s defensive philosophy is decidedly straightforward.

“Go out and make place,” Washington said. “Tackle, turnovers, scoring touchdowns on defense.”

Each week we are going to improve,” the coach said. “We aren’t going to win every game, but we’re going to work to make ourselves better every week.”

The Tigers will play Mars in the season's away-game opener at 7 tonight.
