The Great Escape: Take a Trip to The Clay Cafe

Patch parenting columnist Hilary Daninhirsch tells moms to get their creative juices flowing.

My children are more artistic and creative than I. I'm embarrassed to see my drawings  next to theirs.  I can color inside the lines, but that is where my skills end.

But every so often I like to express what little creativity I have. On those rare times, I have gone to paint-your-own-pottery studios and have made a few surprisingly decent-looking pieces, including a serving tray and a few candy dishes. One of my favorite wedding gifts was a homemade baking dish that one of my best friends and her husband lovingly painted at a pottery studio.

For the more serious artist, a trip to a pottery studio can be a rewarding and relaxing time to concentrate and create.  For others, pottery studios are great places to get together with friends to talk, laugh and catch-up on each other’s lives.

Some studios offer Ladies Nights Out. At The Clay Cafe in Sewickley, for a $7 studio fee and the price of the unfinished bisque, you maychoose from many selections in various price ranges. The cafe offers boxes, frames, mugs and serving pieces, and you may paint as many pieces as you’d like.

Twice a month on Tuesdays, the Clay Cafe has Ladies Night; the next two are from 7-9 p.m. March 24 and April 7.  Advanced reservations are required.

A bonus: Ladies Nights at the Clay Cafe are BYOB (any type of beverage), and the studio will provide complimentary hors d’oeurves.

Clay Cafe will even arrange for Ladies Nights on any other day of the week upon request, though if it’s not a designated Thursday evening Ladies Night, the parties must bring their own munchies and beverages.

So escape to a pottery studio and  get those creative juices flowing.  It’s a guaranteed good time.
