VA Worker Pleads Guilty to Making False Deployment Claim

The McDonald resident is accused of illegally collecting thousands of dollars in active duty pay.

A Washington County manΒ pleaded guilty in federal court to chargesΒ of theft of government money and making a false document, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Pittsburgh.Β 

Federal officials saidΒ Richard A. Ward, 42, of McDonald,Β was a VA PittsburghΒ Healthcare System employee when heΒ submitted a false Special OrderΒ to the VA indicating thatΒ he was deployed for active duty.

The falseΒ Special Order was drawn on theΒ authority of the Department of the Air Force, Pennsylvania Air National Guard 171st Air RefuelingΒ Wing in Moon Township, according to a news release. Β Ward is a Pennsylvania Air NationalΒ Guardsman.Β Β 

The VA placed Ward in a special pay status for VAΒ employees who are activated for military duty. The pay and benefits Ward wrongfully obtained equaled approximately $14,164.91, the news release said.

Ward facesΒ up toΒ 15 years in prison, a $500,000 fine, or both. The courtΒ placed Ward on bond pending a sentence.Β
