Tom Wolf 5/9/14
Tom Wolf was the star at the Easton Area Democratic Club on Friday. Dr. Wolf spent at least 30 minutes introducing himself to and shaking hands witheveryone in the room. He was introduced to the crowd by Sandy Vulcano, Chair of the EADC. Tom started his talk by introducing himself as an unconventional candidate. He noted that he is a life-long democrat, who proudly stands with democratic ideals.
He provided the crowd with a brief biography that included being born and raised in York, PA, where he attended and graduated from the public school system, attended Dartmouth University, leaving Dartmouth to live in a small village in India for 2 1/2 years as a Peace Corp volunteer before returning to, and completing his studies at Dartmouth.
He completed his PhD in political science at MIT, and planned to work in academia. He left academia and returned to his small family building supply business in York. He started as a fork lift operator, and worked through the company, before buying it from his family members. While he owned the company, he paid his workers well, and shared 20-30%of the profit of the company with them. He grew the business and then sold it back to his family.
In 2006, when the Great Recession hit the building supply business very hard, he bought back the business and returned it to profitability. At that time he was asked by then Governor Rendell to be the state Tax Collector. He decided to run for governor out of a long felt need to improve government. He promises to run a different campaign, based on a vision of PA, and not on negativity.
After his speech, he engaged with the people in the very crowded room for about 15 more minutes, before he was whisked to another event by his campaign aides.
The crowd seemed very receptive to his promise of a campaign based upon vision and principle.
