New Timeline Detailed For PECO Gas Main Project In Newtown

Work is expected to resume in May with completion of the project, including road repaving, in mid- to late-June.

NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — PECO is expected to resume work on its South State Street gas main installation project in May, with the entire project completed and the road repaved by mid- to late-June.

The project had been scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, however, permitting for the SEPTA railroad crossing on South State Street delayed the work until this spring, according to information provided by Newtown Borough.

Overall, 82 percent of the gas main installation and 86 percent of the service replacements have been completed, PECO is reporting.

Under a permit from SEPTA, PECO can move forward with the project, using an “open cut” across the tracks, resulting in less closure time for the project.

The original plan would have required PECO to “jack and bore,” which would have resulted in a 24-hour street closure for two months.

Under the revised permit, the project will restart in May to complete the remaining 1,100 feet of new main installation and replacement of the eight remaining services on South State Street in Newtown Borough and Newtown Township.

According to the latest information from PECO, the remaining work will still require some road closures (using existing detours) due to the need to safely install portions of the new main within the center of the roadway. However, some of the remaining work will be completed under flagging operations to allow traffic to pass through the work zone. Any required closures will be limited to weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The remaining replacement work is expected to take approximately six weeks, with an anticipated completion date of mid-June. Immediately following completion of the installation work, the road will be repaved, which will take about two to three weeks.
