NEWTOWN, PA — A new family owned and operated puzzle and game store has opened its doors on South State Street in Newtown Borough.

A step inside the doors at 26 South State Street yields a space filled with “Pieces,” the name of Newtown’s newest retail shop.

“Pieces” is chock full of fun, from nostalgic family games like Trouble, Chutes and Ladders, Operation and Clue, to the latest versions of the Catan board game.

Some of its more popular items include Mahjong, which has been enjoying a resurgence, along with a renewed interest in classic family games, like Life, Sorry, Candy Lane, Simon, and Perfection.

During your visit to “Pieces,” chances are you’ll find either Adrean or her dad, Craig Weidman, behind the counter eager to answer your questions or to recommend a family game or puzzle to take home.

The Weidman family opened their first retail store, Tempus Cards & Gifts, in 2019 at Peddler's Village. Today, the card store is managed by the family’s matriarch, Buffy.

“At our first store, we sold a handful of puzzles - not very many. But they did well for us. So we kept our ears open to what people were saying and what people were buying,” said Adrean. “In researching it, we found there weren’t that many hobby stores geared to an older audience or just families as a whole.”

So when the owners of a puzzle store retired at Peddler’s Village, the family jumped in, making the decision to open its first Pieces store in 2023 geared toward an older audience.

After hitting on a successful model and capitalizing on the trend toward nostalgic games, they made the decision to open a second location in Newtown.

The new store is a nostalgic step back in time to simpler times when families gathered together to play games like Monopoly, Clue, Life and Uno and kids played jacks on the sidewalk.

“Technology is a great tool, but our store has reminded people of the games they used to play and how they can still bring families together,” said Adrean.

“But it isn’t just the games that are bringing families together,” she said. “We have people who are buying puzzles for their shore houses and they they leave them out on the families together table for their family members to put together.

“People like the nostalgia of it,” she said of the store. “There’s nothing quite like it in Newtown,” said Adrean, a Pennsbury graduate, Holland resident and the mother of a 12 and 9 year old.

“Pieces is more of your hobby type of store with games and puzzles,3-D models, puzzle books and all types of custom playing cards,” said Adrean.

Customers can also expect a knowledgeable staff.

“It’s not like walking into a big box store and wondering what to get Suzy for her birthday. We can help you pick the appropriate game or puzzle for that person,” said Adrean. “It’s fun. It’s a place for everyone.”

Hours at the new store are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The store is closed on Monday.
