UPPER MAKEFIELD, PA — Chief Mark Schmidt, who has spent his entire career protecting and serving the residents of township as a member of the police department, is officially calling it a career.

On August 28, Chief Schmidt will transition into his new role as police chief emeritus until his official retirement on August 1, 2027. The transition will allow the township to search for and find his replacement and allow the chief to begin taking some of his well deserved time off.

"Having served Upper Makefield with distinction for over 40 years, Chief Schmidt leaves behind a remarkable legacy," said Board of Supervisors Chairman Ben Weldon. "The entire township thanks Mark for his unwavering service and commitment to Upper Makefield, and we wish him a well-earned retirement."

Chief Schmidt was hired as an officer in 1980 and served in multiple roles until he was named chief in 1997.

In addition to his duties with the police department, Chief Schmidt has served in different roles with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, the Bucks County Chiefs of Police Association, and the Upper Makefield Business Association.

"Eight years of service at any job is a lot. Forty years plus is incredible, especially in public service," said Weldon. "You have been the backbone of public service here in Upper Makefield for all the time you have been here, longer than some of us have been alive. A heartfelt thank you from the board."

Added supervisor Elizabeth Thompson, "Your dedication to Upper Makefield is a true testament to your deep commitment to public service. Your service to our community has left a lasting impact and you will be leaving with some very large shoes to fill. The care you have shown has never gone unnoticed. As you begin this next chapter, we extend our sincere gratitude and wish you all the best for a very well deserved happy and fulfilling retirement."

Chief Schmidt remarked that when he was hired, the board of supervisors was just three members," he said. "I've been here for many buildings and many people that have come and gone.

"You have a great police department - people who are top notch," he said. "I'm leaving you in good hands. I know that. I'll still be here for a little while."
